CODE OF ETHICS

Because I have love and admiration for the Shetland Sheepdog, because my desire is to aid in the preservation and betterment of this very special breed and because I realize the responsibilities with which I am entrusted as a breeder and/or promoter of the Shetland Sheepdog, I will endeavor to follow this code of ethics.

1.         I will familiarize myself with official standard of the breed as approved by AKC as the only standard of excellence by which the Shetland Sheepdog shall be judged.

2.        Through my breeding practices I will constantly strive for improvement of the breed.

3.         I will refrain from using any Shetland Sheepdog of inferior quality for breeding purposes, nor will I breed any dog or bitch without reasonable expectation that the mating will produce puppies which will improve the stock.

4.         I will not sell to wholesalers or retailers.

5.         I will maintain the highest standard of health care for my dogs.

6.         I will do my best to educate people buying my stock on the importance of selective breeding for quality puppies and will sell my pet quality stock with true representation to the purchaser about what is being acquired.

7.         I will recommend to people looking for pet quality dogs only those breeders who abide by this code.

8.         I will withhold registration papers of any dog which has faults of a nature which would make its use for breeding detrimental to the breed; and, in such case, I will obtain a written agreement as required by The American Kennel Club in Chapter 3 Section 6 of the rules applying to registration and dog shows.

9.         I will point out the advantages of a clearly defined agreement when buying, selling or leasing a dog, or providing stud service.

10.       I will exhibit good sportsmanship and always conduct myself in manner which will reflect only credit to my breed, and to the Greater Milwaukee Shetland Sheepdog Club.
